Our Story

The name “Fuller” has been a part of Stoneham’s history since 1830 when young William Griffin Fuller arrived in the town to complete his apprenticeship in the leather trade. By 1835 he owned his own manufacturing business which expanded and relocated within the town in 1850. That same year, Mr. Fuller directed construction of what was termed a “substantial homestead” on Franklin Street combining elements of both Greek revival and Italianate styles of architecture.

Mr. Fuller was a community and church leader and also served in the state legislature.

Lending a Hand

Ownership of this stately home passed to his daughter, Georgianna Fuller, who was a member of an organization committed to lending a hand in service to others.

In 1895, this organization, seeing that there were a number of needy elderly citizens in Stoneham, initiated fundraising efforts for the establishment of a Home for Aged People.

The group worked to raise the sum of $500 and in 1898, with the cooperation of many prominent Stoneham townspeople, formally established a corporation to further the mission of establishing a residential facility.

Ms. Fuller

Over the next three decades a dedicated group worked diligently to raise funds through a variety of methods, but it was not until 1928 that their noble goal was realized, aided substantially by the generosity of Ms. Fuller, who passed away and bequeathed her family home and a substantial sum of money to be used for a residential facility for aged women. Additional funds were raised and the building was renovated to accommodate seven residents.

On January 1, 1930 The Home for Aged People in Stoneham opened its doors.

In 1938, with the assistance of contributions, five bedrooms and a sunroom were added to the original home and men were subsequently welcomed as residents.

In 1984 the name was formally changed to The Fuller House of Stoneham in honor of Miss Fuller and her profound sense of community spirit.
